Medical Doctor | Clinical Researcher | XR Adoption in Healthcare

I am a Family and Community Medicine specialist, clinical researcher and healthcare innovation project manager with more than twenty years of experience in the public healthcare system. My work focuses on the responsible adoption of extended reality (XR) in real clinical settings, especially in primary care, rehabilitation, chronic pain, perioperative care and professional education.

I currently work at Badalona Serveis Assistencials (BSA), an integrated public healthcare organisation in Catalonia, where I coordinate and support XR-based clinical research and innovation projects. Since 2023, I have led and contributed to a translational XR portfolio involving feasibility studies, clinical protocols, ethical approvals and implementation work across several care settings.

I am also a PhD researcher in the Doctoral Programme in Health and Psychology at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), within the Behavior Design Lab, supervised by Dr Manuel Armayones Ruiz and Dr Pierre Bourdin Kreitz. My doctoral research focuses on MCDA-XR, a multicriteria decision-support framework designed to help healthcare organisations assess readiness, barriers, feasibility and strategic value before implementing XR initiatives.

My recent work includes projects such as REDOCVR for chronic pain in primary care, Benestar for professional wellbeing, VRanalgesiaBSA for paediatric venipuncture, REVICTUS for post-stroke rehabilitation, PREOP-VRBSA for preoperative anxiety and cognitive rehabilitation projects using immersive technologies.

I am a founding member of the American Medical Extended Reality Association (AMXRA), part of the inaugural FMXR Fellow Class of 2026, and an active contributor to international XR and healthcare networks including XR4Europe and UnitedXR Europe. My publications include work in JMIR Formative Research, JMIR XR and Spatial Computing and the Journal of Medical Extended Reality.

José Ferrer Costa is a medical doctor specialized in Family and Emergency Medicine. He works as a project manager at the Research and Innovation Department of Badalona Serveis Assistencials (BSA), a public healthcare organization in Catalonia.
